2014 Wilton Yearbook Cover Cake Reveal!

It’s Wilton Yearbook time again! No matter how hard we work designing the inspiration for the inside pages of the Wilton Yearbook, there is still one major decision to be made…what are we going to put on the cover? To answer that question, we asked our online audience, “What would you like to see on the 2014 Wilton Yearbook cover?” One answer, BUTTERCREAM!

Sketching the 2014 Yearbook Cover Cake But we still needed a topic. What were we going to design our cake to look like? What could we do that we have not already done?

Our job was cut out for us and we went on a search. A search that made us determined to give you the buttercream design you yearned for. After weeks of researching trends and styles, we landed on a unique way to incorporate the Steampunk style into our 2014 Yearbook cover.

What is Steampunk? It’s science fiction with steam powered machinery. It is inspired by the Victorian era blending with 19th century wild west civilization with an edginess. Top hats, corsets, lace, metal flowers, tulle, buttons, and even monocles are only some of the fashionable accessories that bring this trend to life!

We finally had a topic we felt we could work with. Something that definitely was edgy and different, but most importantly it had elements that were recognizable and familiar. Our biggest concern? Could buttercream work with this trend? Could we take classic techniques and put a spin on them? Yes…yes…we could!

Designing the Cake

What pans will I use? How many tiers? What color will I use for the cake and its accents? These are questions I must answer before I put pencil to paper. The decisions I make not only affect how the cake will look in person, but also how it will look through the camera’s eye.

The next step is to create a sketch of what the cake could look like. With reference images, colors, and other details confirmed plus plenty of sharpened pencils, I began interpreting what was in my mind on to the paper. Sometimes it takes many sketches, but this time I sketched one cake, liked what I saw, set the pencil down and knew this was it.

Creating the Cake

Now that we have a sketch, it is all in the hands of Wilton’s talented cake decorators. First, what techniques are we going to use? How do we pick from our vast decorating tip assortment and over 100 classic techniques?

The testing begins. Our decorators piped close to 50 technique samples so we could determine just what would look right to make the Steampunk theme rock! We narrowed it down to 12 techniques.

The actual cake was decorated by three different Wilton decorators: Diane Knowlton, Mark Malak and Kathy Krupa, with Jenny Streicher supervising the production.

When the cake was finished, we had a reveal in our office. The reaction…everyone loved it! We were excited for many reasons, but three stood out the most. We gave our audience what they asked for – buttercream, classic techniques, and we put an edgy fun spin on classic techniques, just like the definition of Steampunk!

Steve Rocco Steve is the Senior Director of Cake and Visual Design for Wilton Products. He is responsible for designing all the projects for Wilton's publications and packaging. Steve works with a team of 17 cake decorators who create a 3-d work of edible art from his sketches. Steve has been with Wilton for 24 years and within that time he has been responsible for thousands of project ideas ranging from cookies, candies, and cakes. Steve is also responsible for art directing the photography for all of Wilton's publications, working with a team of photographers and prop stylists to create the mood and sets to showcase all the projects created by Wilton's cake decorators.

    I enjoy the Wilton yearbook but it seems that along with new ideas comes a lot of cost – first for the book itself (considering half of it is a catalog!), and then all the ‘new and different’ tools needed to make the cakes shown. Sure, we all like to try different things, but it’s getting to the point that it’s just too expensive for all of it! While you have everything you need at your fingertips, the rest of us have to purchase each and every thing.
    Perhaps the yearbook for 2015 will be more simple and down to earth – getting back to basics for capturing some newbies to cake decorating like in the past. I know if I were just starting to learn, most of the ideas would be way over my accomplishment level! You need to do things for all levels, not just the new things and advanced people!!

I’m really happy they are going back to more buttercream and look forward to the 2014 idea/catalog issue. I think if they got rid of the catalog part (cause we can see that in stores and online) and added the patterns, it would be a fantastic issue!

I enjoy the look of the fondant creations but you are always surprising me how buttecream can be lovely too. Wilton has inspired me from 1996 when I started decorating cakes. I have been collecting the yearbooks since the 1976 edition and I have not missed one! Love the new creation, so contemporary. Can’t wait to see the entire edition. Thanks you!

    The 2013 Yearbook was a definite improvement with your Cake Couture section and pages 94-97 just before that section. As a self-taught baker and only two years experience, I like looking at the designs for inspiration, but feel as my skill levels progress, I should be able to search your book for additional “next level” designs. Perhaps you can divide your yearbook into Beginner, Intermediate, Designer sections and have an equal number of pictures for each.

    I’m really happy to see this design on the cover and hope you have many more inspirational ideas inside.

    I do business making cakes and one new trend is growing in my area is cakes for teenagers t young guys fron 11 to 27 asking for cakes with games figures, Xbox, and other games as well, based on the high difficulty to recreate I use companies where I send the PDF image and they send me back printed with edible ink and edible paper with instructions attached to add, the difficult part is covered mi art is recreate on the cake part of the game. Is fun and that customer cluster appreciate we take care of them in a modern up to date themes related to their new games era.

    Do you have any plans to release this, or any back issues in electronic form. I have been using my Computer, and tablet (both Apple) quite frequently for cake decorating. I keep track of my inventory, both soft and hard goods, in a database (Bento) and my recipes. I have no more room for any paper books in my home, and have only purchased ebooks.

    I was very unhappy with last year’s yearbook. There were some darn ugly cakes in there, not to mention that the yearbook was more like a sales catalog than a cake book. So, it should be interesting to see if there has been any improvements or if it’s more of the same.

  72. I started taking the Wilton Decorating Classes, Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced in 1973. I have been using Wilton products ever since that time, and my yearbook collection starts in 1977. I also have the Celebrate books. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the inspiration and ideas that I get from the yearbooks. I also own soooo many of the Wilton pans and tools!!

    I think it’s great. It has the look fondant fans like, but with the techniques, interest and flavour buttercream fans like. It makes me want to buy the yearbook and learn the techniques better.     I have always loved the yearbook from the beginnng. Last years couture cakes were a little disappointing and since most people love buttercream, this years should be a big success. Most of my friends and relatives ask for a cake that they can “eat it all” and not have to peel away the majority of the fondant and leave nothing to enhance the cake. I also love that the wilton people always respond to my emails of suggestions. Thanks for all your hard work and amazing talents.

    I’ve been doing cakes for 28 years and I’m still amazed at all the new designs that the Wilton staff members create. Love the new front cover and can’t wait to see the inside.

  93. I wish the books were more like the books in the 80’s and 90’s. They had more of a variety of cakes to make. Also, I would like to see some of the cake pans come back. Certain ones like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny hold the bass drum, Rudolph, Winnie the Pooh, etc. Where can we find the old pans that you retired if we would like to purchase them?

    I have seen many steampunk inspired cakes-have to say I am underwhelmed by this one. Doesn’t seem to be anything “new” or “cutting edge” about this cake. I always look to Wilton for inspiration but in this case the design seems tired to me. Sorry-it’s a miss for me, hope the designs inside are better.

I would highly recommend to your marketing department to consider publishing an electronic version of your yearbook without including any Wilton products in it – when a product is referenced in the recipe, make it a hot-link in the ebook when it appears in a recipe – that would allow all hot-links and quick ordering capability if linked to ecommerce within the recipe. If Wilton continues down the path of including all products in their yearbook, I think it’s a bad idea as I feel I’m paying you to put your product catalog together – and most companies now have electronic rather than printed catalogs – save yourselves the print fees and keep your catalog electronic. It will improve your customer affinity.

    Been a Wilton customer for almost 40 years and while the cover cake is nice, there is just something missing for me–almost like it’s a “Barbie-fied” version of Steampunk. Obviously though, lots of others loved it, but there are ALWAYS goodies to be found in the Wilton catalogs. Even though I only now decorate for family and friends due to extreme arthritis, I’m always finding new ideas & techniques every year and have begun to teach another generation (or two) to carry on the tradition of fantastic cakes.

    The cover is great! I too collect the yearbooks and I would be terribly disappointed if you did not offer them in print. The online version would definitely be beneficial to a big part of your customers but what about the people that don’t have access to a computer but still love to decorate and get ideas from your wonderful publication? Just something to think about. I love to have the book in my hand and study it and really look at everything that is inside. “If it is not broke don’t fix it”. Thanks for all the years you have provided “therapy” for me.

    The cake pattern look’s great,but I have a question?,why pay for a cake that you cann’t eat,pay for something you can eat and enjoy
    with family,friends,loveones,neighbor’s,with the decation’s made from buttercream,royal icing,so your families will tell others how good everything was and watch your bussiness grow faster,better I have been doing cakes for over 43yrs. Ihave been told that YOU can’t eat
    foundant,because it is very bitter,.Pay for something that everyone
    can sit down and enjoy,Ipromise you they will tell others about a wounderfull cake ,pie ,candy,cookies,balls,ect.;if they can enjoy it.
    I would like to be on your mailing list of WILTON CAKES BOOK,because I have collected wilton for so many years too!.
    I get a very realaxing feeling when I do have time to relax just to goback looking over the yeras of Wilton Cakes.,people now day’s don’t want to pay and baker for all the hard work that is put in
    the time for making a great wounderfull cake or ecter,because of the icing either to bitter or that dibetic’s can’t eat enjoy that

    I am so happy that others besides myself, wanted you to do more buttercream cakes. The others might be great looking, but doesn’t taste the same as buttercream.
