5 Unexpected Lessons I Learned from a Wilton Class

I recently completed the Wilton Master Course where my brain was packed full of decorating techniques and ideas. I knew going into the course that I would learn how to make flowers, borders, designs and more, but I also learned some other lessons along the way and felt inspired in ways I didn’t expect.

1. I felt inspired to start cooking again.

A few years ago, I transitioned out of my cereal-for-dinner phase and started to try actual recipes. You know, the kind with veggies and spices and stuff. I really enjoyed it and kept up with it for a while. Then laziness, boredom or a combination of both hit and I reverted back to my carryout and boxed meal habits. While taking the Master Course, I was forced to get over lazy excuses such as “I don’t want to wash dishes!” because we changed our icing and colors quite often in class and I washed dishes and tools several times a day. I also felt a sense of accomplishment each time I finished something new we’d learned. I suddenly felt the urge to go to the grocery store and start cooking again. I’ve already tried a few new recipes since starting the Master Course and am happy to be cooking again.

2. Practice, practice, practice.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve become easily frustrated when I can’t get something on the first try: cursive writing in grade school, math…always, crafting projects, etc. Cake decorating techniques are something you must truly practice, but I also found that you should enjoy the practice. It’s okay to make mistakes and simply being dedicated to improve is something to be proud of!

3. Appreciate your progress.

Even if practice didn’t make perfect for some of the techniques I learned, I was still proud of my progress. Something that seemed impossible on the first try became less and less intimidating as time went on. It’s always a great feeling to see how far you’ve come on something, even if you aren’t yet at the finish line.

4. I can wake up early.

I’ve never been a morning person. My normal work day starts at 8 a.m. and the Master Course starts at 7 a.m. I don’t know why this one hour seemed to make such a difference to me, but it was a struggle to adjust to at first. However, I made it on time or even early to class each day and it soon my body adjusted to the new schedule. This motivated me to get back on track with workout classes I used to attend at a local gym. If I can wake up early for cake decorating, I can wake up early to work out!

5. I am capable of the “wow” factor.

My final cake is beautiful. I love it and it looks just how I envisioned. However, that’s not to say it’s perfect. I know all the spots on my cake that have mistakes, but to most people, my cake simply looks amazing. I shared photos of my cake on Facebook and Instagram and was thrilled with the feedback I received. It only made me feel more proud of what I accomplished in two weeks. We are our own worst critics and many of us doubt what we are capable of or what we can achieve, but now I know I can create something that will get a “wow!” reaction.

    This cake is beautiful!! I really like the colors and flowers. This are flowers made of royal icing?
