My friend Laura recently mentioned to me that she invited her cousin’s three daughters to share their First Holy Communion with her son Jacob. I quickly volunteered to make the cake, or should I say cakes? The hardest part was deciding what kind of cake to make for three girls and one boy.
I searched the internet, but nothing was striking my fancy. Because I’m a twin who remembers having to share a cake for every occasion, I didn’t want to make a traditional sheet cake. I decided that each child would have their own cake. Jacob would have a larger cake since he was sharing his party and his home.
Laura mixed and baked all the cakes. We decided each child would get a different flavor. Jacob would have chocolate cake with chocolate (Decorating Icing), Alexis would have red velvet cake with cream cheese icing, Alyssa would have lemon cake with lemon icing, and Lilliana would have butter pecan with buttercream (Decorator Icing). I leveled the cakes with my cake leveler and iced them on cake boards. I then had the fun task of decorating all the cakes!
Each cake was covered with white fondant. I now had my blank canvas to start my creations! Using Sugar Sheets, my daughters helped by punching out flowers with the Flower Chain Border Punch and circles with the smallest punch from the 3 Piece Layered Circle Cutting Insert Set for the cakes.
We used Piping Gel and a Decorator Brush to attach the flowers to the bottom of the cakes, and also to attach the white Sugar Pearls to the centers of the flowers. Using the pastel color fondant, we added sky blue icing color to the blue and pink icing color to the pink to achieve darker colors. We used the green fondant right out of the package, and added violet icing color to additional white fondant. We then added a little Ready-to-Use Gum Paste and kneaded that into the fondant. I used my Decorative Press Set, and the girls cranked out ropes of fondant which I cut and shaped into letters for the cakes. I attached these letters with Piping Gel.
As my younger daughter and I were getting ready the previous morning, I almost forgot to make the fondant crosses. Luckily, she agreed to roll out a little white fondant and using my Cross Cookie Cutter and my rolling pin with confectioner’s sugar, she cut out the crosses and put them on a cooling grid so they could start to harden from the top and the bottom. She did a great job!!!
I knew I was taking on a lot with four cakes. I wanted to make them beautiful, but I also did not want to roll out a million fondant balls to decorate the cakes. I came up with the perfect solution by purchasing jawbreakers, gum balls, and malted milk balls for the cakes. I had different sizes, colors, and sheens of the candy; just what I had envisioned. I just made sure to let everyone know what the balls were when I cut the cakes. These worked well with my Sugar Sheet shapes!
I attached a Sugar Sheet flower to the center of the crosses with Piping Gel. I then put Decorator Icing in a disposable bag and snipped off the end. I took a sharp knife and cut a slit in the fondant and pushed the cross into the cake a little bit. I then took my icing bag and squeezed a little icing around the cross base and decorated with my purchased candy. I used the same technique to decorate another spot on the top of the cake and then sections around the bottom of the cake. This also worked well to hide the area where I put my finger through the fondant (ughhh) or had an area of fondant that hadn’t turned out as well as I hoped (double ughhh)!!! I also used additional Sugar Pearls and attached them to the candy and around the cake with Piping Gel.
To decorate Jacob’s cake, we used the two shades of blue Sugar Sheets, white and blue gumballs, blue jawbreakers, and chocolate malted milk balls. Alexis’ cake was decorated with pink Sugar Sheets, pink and red gumballs and red jawbreakers.
For Alyssa’s cake, we used light green Sugar Sheets, green and yellow gumballs and green jawbreakers. Lilliana’s cake was decorated using purple and orange gumballs and orange jawbreakers.
The children loved seeing their names on their individual cakes and the guests loved the different flavors! It was such a hit that guests came up and requested a little piece of this one and another piece of that one, as they couldn’t decide which ONE they wanted. Some guests even came back to try the remaining flavors!!! Such decisions!!! The red velvet and chocolate were the favorites, followed by butter pecan, and then the lemon!
