Grandma’s Kolachy Cookies

Kolachy Cookies

Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around baking with my mom. Birthdays, holidays, scout bake sales, my mom always baked and I was there in my “Mom’s Little Helper” apron ready to get my hands dirty. I can’t say for sure, but I believe in the beginning I helped because that meant I got first dibs on the brownie covered beaters (I had to get there before my brothers). But I then realized there is more to helping than making a mess and eating raw batter. Some of my mom’s early lessons included “do not turn the mixer on high in a bowl of flour” or “don’t crack eggs directly into the bowl or we will be fishing out eggshell for the next 20 minutes.” At this point it wasn’t really about the baking, but about making memories (and a mess) with my mom.

Cinnamon Rolls – Perfect for Mother’s Day Brunch!

Friday, May 8th, 2015

I come from a long line of bakers, including my great-grandmother, Elizabeth. My grandmother likes to tell a story about how her nephew, Tom, always loved the center cinnamon roll. One morning, he passed when the rolls came around, saying he was too full. Everyone else at the table knew he was actually hoping they would come back around to him—including my great-uncle, who took the center roll on purpose! (Clearly, I’ve inherited not only my baking ability, but also my contrary nature from that side of the family).

We’ll start with Marilyn from Pink Martinis and Pearls, who has fond memories of watching her mother bake in the kitchen. Every birthday was celebrated with a homemade cake and one day, her mother made a chocolate cake that has since earned the title of “best ever in all the land”. This cake has even won 2 blue ribbons at county fairs! But before I steal Marilyn’s thunder, I’ll let her tell the story herself, as she does it so well.

Mother’s Day Pops Bouquet for a Sweet Sister

Friday, May 4th, 2012

On Mother’s Day, I recognize my sister Cindy because she has been like a mother to me. From watching after me when I was young to applying my make-up for Prom, I’ve always felt lucky to have a “second” mother. Since Cindy is an avid gardener, I wanted to gift her with an edible flower bouquet – Voila – Cake Pops! Sure, I could have taken the easy way out and ordered flowers, but gifting homemade treats that come from the heart is more meaningful. (more…)

Bake Something Special for Your Mom!

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

When I was younger and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day would roll around, I would ask my parents “when is Kid’s Day?” They would reply “every day.” As a kid, I was not amused. Now, I realize the truth behind their reply. Parents care and work for their children every day and are given one official day of appreciation. Why not show that appreciation with a homemade treat? (more…)
