A Whimsical First Birthday

First birthdays are a big milestone, and many parents strive to come up with a unique theme that captures the spirit of their son or daughter. Jenny Streicher is no different.

As a Senior Content Designer in the Wilton Decorating Room, she spends her days developing new designs and decorating ideas for cakes and sweet treats. Naturally, Streicher wanted to design and decorate her daughter’s first birthday cake on her own. However, she didn’t stop at one cake – she made five different cakes that created one whimsical first birthday.

Peach Cobbler Butterfly Cupcakes

Kolachy Cookies

Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around baking with my mom. Birthdays, holidays, scout bake sales, my mom always baked and I was there in my “Mom’s Little Helper” apron ready to get my hands dirty. I can’t say for sure, but I believe in the beginning I helped because that meant I got first dibs on the brownie covered beaters (I had to get there before my brothers). But I then realized there is more to helping than making a mess and eating raw batter. Some of my mom’s early lessons included “do not turn the mixer on high in a bowl of flour” or “don’t crack eggs directly into the bowl or we will be fishing out eggshell for the next 20 minutes.” At this point it wasn’t really about the baking, but about making memories (and a mess) with my mom.

Cinnamon Rolls – Perfect for Mother’s Day Brunch!

I come from a long line of bakers, including my great-grandmother, Elizabeth. My grandmother likes to tell a story about how her nephew, Tom, always loved the center cinnamon roll. One morning, he passed when the rolls came around, saying he was too full. Everyone else at the table knew he was actually hoping they would come back around to him—including my great-uncle, who took the center roll on purpose! (Clearly, I’ve inherited not only my baking ability, but also my contrary nature from that side of the family).
