Hi, I’m Stephanie! Do you want to ice a cake smooth? Make your own buttercream? Learn some buttercream decorating techniques? Find it all on Creativebug and learn at your own pace in the comfort of your own home. Here’s a behind the scenes look at what it was like for me to film these Wilton Method classes for Creativebug.
One day my boss asked to see me in the conference room. No matter how secure you are in your job, it is never settling to hear your boss wants to see you in the conference room. However, this wasn’t bad news – in fact it was very, very good news. My jaw dropped to the floor as she told me I was going to San Francisco to film Creativebug classes! It was there that my adventure began.
The next few weeks were a whirlwind of conference calls and meetings. Before filming a class, a lot of thought goes into the subject and material. What do students want to learn and what is the best possible way to teach it? We want to deliver trendy classes that are not only helpful but also fun! I mean, its cake decorating, of course, it should be fun! We decided on a Wilton Buttercream Class showcasing some of our classic decorating techniques.
Lots of prep goes into making an outline, preparing the projects and final products. I had no idea so many Wilton departments were involved in this process. The Wilton Decorating Room, Test Kitchen, Creative Department and Digital Marketing team all play a role in making these classes a reality. It begins with an idea from the Creative Department. Then it makes its way to the Decorating Room where that idea becomes a reality. There’s outlines, concepts, sketches and finally amazing decorated projects. I am constantly in awe of the incredible cakes, cupcakes, cookies and other sweet treats that come out of the Wilton Decorating Room. After the Decorating Room has created the samples, those samples are sent to Creativebug for approval and further discussions. Finally, products are put together to be shipped. After the few (seemingly very short) weeks of preparation, we were ready to go. With our suitcases full of buttercream, aprons and decorating tips, it was time to make our way to the Creativebug headquarters.
Creativebugs’ classes are filmed in their studios in downtown San Francisco. The kitchen set was beautiful! Creativebug also did an amazing job of staging it and making it feel like home (not that the kitchen in my home ever looks that nice!). We met with the amazing team of cameramen and producers that would be working on our class and all of a sudden it was time to film.
Theater, acting and performing is something I have always enjoyed, and I quickly fell in love with teaching these classes. I have been decorating cakes for years, but there is nothing more rewarding than passing that passion on and teaching a skill I love to someone who has never done it before. To be able to do that on this scale is something I will forever be grateful for.
So here it is, months later and all that hard work has paid off! Creativebug is an incredible website full of lots of things to learn and I am proud to now be a part of that. I hope you enjoy my series on buttercream techniques!
