What are Candy Melts candy?

Candy Melts are a colored, flavored confectionary ingredient that’s used for baking and decorating. They’re meant to be melted and used as a candy coating for all kinds of treats, including cake pops, truffles, pretzels and more.

You can also use Candy Melts to make molded candies. They’re safe to use with most plastic and silicone candy molds.

Candy Melts come in a variety of colors and flavors, so it’s easy to customize your treats for any occasion using Candy Melts candy.

What are Candy Melts made of?

The main ingredients in Candy Melts are sugar and oil. The sugar adds sweetness while the oil helps the candy break down when heated.

Seasonal Candy Melts may also contain other added flavors, such as peppermint, cookie batter, peanut butter or strawberry.

All standard Wilton Candy Melts candy wafers are vanilla-flavored, unless otherwise stated.

Are Candy Melts chocolate?

Since they do not contain any cocoa, Candy Melts are not chocolate. However, Wilton does make chocolate-flavored Candy Melts, available in a Light and Dark variety.

Do Candy Melts expire?

Though they will last a while if stored properly, Candy Melts are best used within 18 months of the date they were made. Each package contains a stamped series of numbers and letters to help mark the date they were packaged. We use a Julian Date calendar and go off the first five digits of this code.

For example, let’s say your bag code is 19114. The first two numbers (19) are the year (2019), and the last three numbers (114) are the day of the year out of 365, which is April 24. That means – in this example – the Candy Melts were packaged April 24, 2019.

How to melt Candy Melts candy

You can melt Candy Melts using one of three methods: the microwave, the double boiler or the Candy Melts melting pot.

How you melt your Candy Melts will depend on your project. For small batches of candy, the best option is the microwave. If you’re dipping cake pops or pretzels, we suggest the melting pot. And if you’re melting a large amount of candy, your best bet is the double boiler.

If you have any leftover candy from your project, you can let it harden and use it again later on. Just make sure your candy is free of any crumbs before storing.

How to make Candy Melts smooth

If you need to smooth out your candy for easier dipping or drizzling, you can add EZ Thin Dipping Aid. These crystals are perfect for getting your candy nice and smooth, ideal for cake pops, pretzels, cookies and more.

EZ Thin crystals are also odorless and tasteless – and can even be used to rescue overheated, thickened Candy Melts.

If you don’t have EZ Thin on hand, you can also add 2 teaspoons of solid vegetable shortening per 12 oz. of candy to help thin it out. Never add liquids, such as milk or water, to your Candy Melts. Liquid can cause your candy to seize, rendering it unusable.
