A Twisted Summer Birthday Celebration

August 22nd, 2011 by Kristie Sarmiento

Usually July in the Chicagoland area is a month filled with sunshine and warmth that I like to think is a reflection of the excitement surrounding my birthday. This year’s excitement was tempered by the dread of officially leaving the big 3-0 behind.

In July, our weather went from extreme to extreme: blistering heat advisories one day to lightning, rainstorms and twister sightings the next. We had not one, but TWO tornado warnings last month! So the big question on everyone’s mind must be “How on earth did Kristie celebrate her birthday?” I know it’s all I thought about too…

Doughnut Twist Pan I decided to let Mother Nature be my guide, and this year’s theme was a Twisted Summer birthday!

We spiraled streamers along the ceiling, served freshly-squeezed orange juice swirled with pureed strawberries, and the coup de grâce for dessert? TWISTED DOUGHNUTS!

The twisted doughnuts were a breeze with the new Wilton Doughnut Twist Pan, especially since it came with an easy-to-use recipe for both the baked crullers and the sweet toppings on the back of the package.

Making Twisted Doughnuts

With the help of my nephews, my sister quickly made the batter, filled the pan cavities and dropped it into the oven. The only challenge was trying to keep Tyler and Evan from continuously “tasting” the confectioners’ sugar glaze and the cinnamon sugar toppings before the doughnuts were even out of the oven! It was a miracle there was anything left to top them with!

My mom and nephews opted for the sugar glaze, my dad and I went with cinnamon sugar, and my sister? She took the theme to the extreme by alternating toppings on each twist!

This twisted celebration was definitely the best of both worlds!
