Baby’s First Birthday Luau

It’s August and summer is in full swing so it’s time to limbo, baby! My sweet little boy, Matthew, turned one year young last week so we hung pineapples from the trees and threw the best Baby’s First Luau ever!

The yard was decked out with tiki torches, paper plumeria, and grass table skirts to create a perfect tropical setting. All our guests showed up in Hawaiian shirts and we handed out leis, grass skirts and flowers for the little girls’ hair.

Luau Birthday Cupcakes We toasted Matthew’s first year with fruity drinks in coconut cups topped with colorful paper parasols, ate citrus-fried chicken and pork (no pig on a spit, just hot dogs on the grill!), and had a tropical fruit salad.

The most flavorful and fun treats were the amazing pineapple-banana cupcakes topped with white and orange plumeria. A talented friend from work made the flowers using Gum Paste and Ready-to-Use White Rolled Fondant which she painted with Primary and Bright Shimmer Dust. They were a huge hit – both beautiful AND delicious.

Luau Birthday Cupcake Toppers For the kids’ cupcakes, we used Cupcake Toppers to make bear, boy, and girl cupcakes – each one wearing a tiny Hawaiian lei piped with Decorating Tip #14. The Cupcake Toppers saved us so much time and got a great response from the kids – they all wanted the cupcake that looked like them!

We served the cupcakes on a Cupcakes ‘N More® 38 Count Large Dessert Stand which created a real “wow” centerpiece for the table.

Of course, the big moment of the day was when Matthew got his hands on (and in!) his first birthday cake. After smashing the icing and smearing it all over his face and hair, he actually got quite a bit of the cake in his mouth!

I used the #1 Shaped Pan, spatula-iced it with our creamy white Ready-to-Use Decorator Icing, and star-tipped a Polynesian lei border in orange and yellow. Quick and easy!

Luau Birthday Cake The easiest, yet most amazing decorating, was how I created my son’s name using Bright Blue Sugar Sheets!

I simply traced the letters I needed onto parchment paper, then laid the parchment over the Sugar Sheet and used the Scriber Tool from my 10-Piece Fondant/Gum Paste Tool Set to press impressions of the letters onto the Sugar Sheet. Then I used scissors to cut out each letter. I picked a fun, whimsical font, so if I didn’t cut perfectly on the lines, it still looked great.

Once the letters were all cut out, I placed them on the freshly iced cake so when we cut into the cake, it was like they had been painted on. Everyone wanted to know how I got the name perfectly iced on the cake like that – no one believed me when I told them how easy it was!

The party lasted long after my little guy went to sleep. We listened to island tunes as we sent the kids home with loot bags full of candy and toys, while the adults received Square Blue Favor Boxes decorated with flowers and filled with salt water taffy, of course! Aloha!
