Wilton Behind the Scenes: Decorating Room Featuring Jenny Streicher

Jenny Streicher’s interest in baking and decorating started when she was in high school. As a Senior Content Designer in the Wilton Decorating Room, she spends much of her time developing new designs and decorating ideas for cakes and sweet treats.

Streicher has worked in the Decorating Room for 10 years now and pulls inspiration for new designs from a variety of sources. Patterns, jewelry, clothing, pillows, lampshades and greeting cards are all fair game for new looks on cakes. She often finds the best way to start on a new design is to dive right in and start testing the idea.

“Sometimes I sketch the designs in advance, sometimes I don’t,” she said.  “I think a better way to get a visual is to actually start creating the project; make up a small sample and see how it turns out.”

Since Streicher works with all different mediums – buttercream, gum paste and fondant – her favorite types of projects and decorating style is constantly changing.


“There have been times where I thought something I made was the greatest thing ever, and now if I look back at it I’m no longer a fan of it,” she said. “I do like doing really gory things and created a really cool cake with our skull pan. I like when I have creative freedom to make something like that cake.”

This “Creepiest Cranium Cake” is one of Streicher’s favorite projects.

Beyond cake decorating, Streicher is tapping into other creative activities such as painting. She recently started a watercolor painting class and looks forward to bringing some of those techniques into cake design. She also keeps her eye on trends and ways to work them into her decorating.

“For trends, the statement flower and metallics are still big,” she said. “There’s the painting trend, a lot of geometric, and the ikat pattern.”

Streicher creates new patterns and designs by finding different ways to use the same decorating tip, such as these seven ways to use decorating tip 47. She also finds different uses for Wilton products and recently came up with these three unique ways to use a fondant mold. When it comes to baking and decorating, she encourages everyone to give it a try.

“A lot of things are probably much easier than people think they are,” she said. “Many decorating ideas may seem intimidating, but really they aren’t too bad.”
