Decorating Sunflower Cupcakes – Quick and Easy!

August 21st, 2013 by Paula Ivancicts

Summer is winding down and it seems like every other weekend includes a party. Whenever I needed a sweet treat to share, I brought decorated cupcakes. One of my favorite designs this year was a cupcake decorated with sunflowers, ladybugs and bumblebees. They were so bright and cheerful – and a big hit!

Decorating the cupcakes was easy. I made edible ladybugs by drawing a triangle, a line and a few dots using Wilton’s black Candy Decorating Pen on chocolate coated candies. For my bumblebee, I used a chocolate coated peanut and drew 3 lines, 2 eyes and attached 2 large Jumbo Heart Sprinkles using a dab of icing.

I love using Wilton’s Decorator Icing because it tastes great and couldn’t be easier to use! I added a little water to the icing and mixed in Lemon Yellow Icing Color until I was happy with the shade of yellow.

To create the sunflower, I used Decorating Tip 4B. I started at the center of the cupcake and piped 6 lines to the edge. Next, I made loops between each line. It was that easy! I then added a Dark Cocoa Candy Melts® Candy to the centers. To finish them, I added my ladybugs and bumblebees.

I displayed the cupcakes in small terra cotta pots, but I could have easily used a Cupcakes ‘N More® 13 Count Small Dessert Stand. What are some of your favorite ways to display cupcakes?

I was curious if anyone had a rough idea how quickly you could decorate one sunflower cupcake. (As in minutes per cupcake) I will be using tip 366 for the petals, and a multi circle tip for the center (can’t remember the tip). I am making 300 for a wedding next week. Thank you! 🙂
