How to Make Hot Fudge Sundae Cupcakes

My boyfriend comes from a large family and every summer, his mom’s side has a family picnic and reunion. Since there are so many people in his family – especially kids! – I love making desserts for their get-togethers because I know they’ll be enjoyed and won’t go to waste. Hot Fudge Sundae Cupcakes

The entire weekend was a busy one for us, so I knew I wanted to bring something that was quick and easy to make but still looked impressive. His family does know I work for Wilton, after all! As I thought about summer BBQ’s and picnics, an idea hit me: hot fudge sundae cupcakes.

I promise these are super easy to make and everyone will be wowed by them! I started off with a dark chocolate cake mix. You can use whatever chocolate cake mix or recipe you’d like. I added 1/4 cup of chocolate syrup to the batter for some extra chocolate flavor. I baked these cupcakes in red baking cups at 350 degrees for 18 minutes.  Since I was on a time crunch, once they were done baking, I put them on a cooling grid and popped them in the refrigerator. While the cupcakes cooled, I melted a bag of dark cocoa Candy Melts Candy in my Candy Melts Candy Melting Pot. Once the Candy Melts were completely melted, I switched my melting pot setting from “melt” to “warm”.

When the cupcakes felt cool to the touch, I removed them from the fridge and started to spatula ice the tops with white Ready-to-Use Decorator Icing. I decided to spatula ice the tops of the cupcakes so the Candy Melts (the “hot fudge”) would show up better. I then poured my melted Candy Melts into a decorating bag. You can also microwave your Candy Melts in these bags at half power in 30 second intervals, but I prefer to use the melting pot because I can work on other things while the candy melts down. I cut the tip off the decorating bag and with a quick zigzag motion added the melted candy to the tops of the cupcakes. Then I added some rainbow jimmies to the melted candy. I just love the pop of color from these classic ice cream sprinkles.

Finally, while my Candy Melts were still warm, I added a small 1M swirl on top of the candy. The swirl helped the candy ooze out just a little bit. I then added more sprinkles and topped off each cupcake with a maraschino cherry. See, I told you it was easy!


I love how these cupcakes turned out and was so excited to share them with everyone at the picnic.



Since the Candy Melts were now hardened again, I was curious to hear everyone’s feedback about the mix of hardened candy and fluffy icing. Turns out it was a hit! Many said they liked the combination of textures. The Candy Melts also helped my icing stay perfectly in place. I would share my own opinion about the cupcakes, however…I didn’t even get to eat one! They were devoured by the kids and adults before I had a chance.
