Learn to Decorate With Buttercream in the New Wilton Course 1!

April 13th, 2014 by Joanne Sofia

Wilton Method Course 1 CakeHere at Wilton, we believe any occasion deserves fabulously decorated treats! We’re here to help you learn how to do just that: Decorate treats you’ll be proud to share. So we’re pleased to announce that we’ve updated our Course 1 curriculum to better meet your needs.

Whether you’re new to decorating or you want a refresher, the new Course 1 — Building Buttercream Skills serves up some trendy new techniques to update or develop your skills. Learn to make a two-color double bag swirl for cupcakes that look much more difficult to decorate than they are! Practice the pulled dot technique for a modern twist on decorating cakes, cupcakes and sweet treats. Use rosettes, leaves and loops to make one-of-a-kind cakes.

More than just rosettes, you’ll also learn to make easy flowers that are sure to impress! Pipe sunflower, daisy and zinnia, along with class favorites: ribbon rose and swirled drop flowers. You’ll have them mastered in no time, thanks to your Certified Wilton Method Instructor, new Course book and practice board.

And since not every occasion or celebration requires a cake, you’ll decorate cupcakes in the very first lesson. With dozens of new ways to decorate them, you’ll be so happy with your cupcakes that you’ll be snapping pictures of them to share on Pinterest and Instagram!

Blue Diamond CakeWe’ve also updated the inspiration projects in the Course 1 book. With endless ideas to inspire you, you’ll be dreaming in buttercream after your very first class! With the trend toward simpler cakes with dramatic impact, you’ll love that you don’t have to spend hours and hours decorating your cakes to earn oohs and aahs from friends and family.

By now you’re probably wondering. “Why the updates?” We spoke with consumers and Certified Wilton Method Instructors, as well as doing research in our various consumer segments and learned that, while students loved Course 1, there was room for improvement. So we worked with educators and our team here — everyone from the education team to the decorating team — to rethink Course 1. Once we had the course well underway, we did some testing to make sure what we thought worked actually did. After a few more improvements, the new Wilton Course 1 was ready for you!

In the process, we kicked off a new certification process for our Wilton Method Instructors. We created additional training, establishing the new Wilton Learning Management System so your classroom experience will be even better. Our Certified Wilton Method Instructors will receive ongoing training, so they’ll always be “in the know” about the latest techniques to decorate the trendiest treats.

Go to wilton.com/classes/ to find a class near you. We even make that easy — just enter your zip or postal code and select how many miles you want to search. Click “Find Classes,” and you’ll see which stores are offering the course in your area. So, round up your pals and sign up today!

I was enrolled in Course 1 for April and had to leave the second class when my Mom fell and broke her hip. I am now going to start again tomorrow (May class). I have purchased the Course 1 kit for the April class and after the first lesson bought the Ultimate Set. Since the curriculum has changed I have now bought the new Course one book, but was told at Michaels that I could download the new practice pages (I have two sets of the old ones!) I can not find the new pages on the Wilton site. Can you help me?

    • Rochelle says:

I am having the same problem. The new book says to go to s.wilton.com/practicesheets, but these are the “old” practice sheets.

      • Stephanie Goode says:

        Hi Dianne & Rochelle,
I’m Stephanie Goode, the Educational Curriculum Manager here at Wilton, and I think I can help you both!
First, Dianne, I’m really sorry to hear about your mom. I hope she’s feeling better soon. Glad to hear that you will be joining us for our new Course 1 classes starting in May.

When we updated the curriculum, the practice sheets were updated as well, but we did not upload them as the book says. Please let your instructor know that you need the updated practice sheets, and she can print them out for you.

I apologize for any confusion. We’re updating the book with the next reprinting so as to eliminate any confusion in the future.

I hope you both enjoy the new course and will give me any feedback once you are done! Good luck and happy decorating!

Good evening! I’m going to be taking the new Wilton Course 1 later this month. I bought the Student Kit for the class before the new updated version came out for purchase. Could you please tell me if there is any difference in the materials between the old & new Student Kit 1 so I’ll be prepared for my class once it starts? I can’t return the kit because I have opened it, & I can’t afford to buy the newer version all together, so any help would be appreciated!

I had also purchased the lesson book before the new one came out… should I exchange it for the newest version?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Good Afternoon,
A friend and I just took all 4 Wilton courses spanning from October 2013 to March 2014. In the last course our instructor, who was wonderful, mentioned that Wilton would be revamping the course material. I am wondering if there are plans for a supplemental class of sorts to teach solely the new material for all 4 courses? I have looked over the booklet for the new course 1 and it appears that about half of the techniques used were taught in the old class and half of them are new. I wish I would have known that the classes were being updated when I started them, because the material is much more modern but I don’t see the point in taking all four classes again when only half the material is new. Under the same subject as the previous comments, It would be very helpful to have the new practice sheets posted to the website so as to not buy the exact same kit minus a few different pieces of paper.

Myself and 4 friends enrolled to take the new course 1 at Michaels and were not told that we needed to purchase the book. Where can we find the book? Presently Michaels Bowling Green Ky does not have the books for purchase. Have tried Hobby Lobby and were able to obtain 2 but still need 2. Have taken classes 1-4 and didn’t have the problem of finding books as they were provided by the Wilton Instructor at Michaels. This is very discouraging for new people taking the class to not be able to get materials needed. Is it possible to order from Wilton?

    Thank you for you help.

My daughter and I took the first two courses in January and April. Just found out the courses have changed and wish I would have known the updates were coming. Most of the techniques taught in the new version are what I wanted to learn to begin with. Very disappointed I wss not informed of the updates. I do not want to pay again for both classes to learn the new material. Is there a way to get lessons on the new material without taking the class over in Lincoln, Ne?

  14. Megan Lambert says:

I would like to purchase Wilton method course books 1 thru 3, but have not seen it on your online store. I need the books to refresh my memory. I did those classes in the early ’90s and cannot find my books because I moved and must have lost them in the process.

  15. Elizabeth says:

    To Whom it may concern,

I, along with other people, have taken all four classes in the Wilton Cake Decorating course back in the Spring/Summer of 2014.

My mother and I have never got our certificates. I have been contacting our instructor, but I get no reply back.

What can I do to get this(these) certificate(s)?
