Swirl Three Colors at Once with the Color Swirl™ Tri-Color Coupler

May 6th, 2015 by Desiree Smith

Topping cupcakes with a two or three-color swirl is nothing new. For years we’ve been doubling or tripling up 12-inch decorating bags into larger 16-inch decorating bags. It’s worked, but it’s also been messy, inconsistent and sometimes sloppy.

Color SwirlThe Color Swirl™ Tri-Color Coupler helps decorators make less mess and create more consistent results.

  • Use up to three colors to create cleaner, more defined multi-color icing swirls with the specially designed coupler.
  • The Color Swirl coupler joins two or three decorating bags using flat-sided coupler pieces that connect, creating a flush seam with a snug fit.
  • Uses recommended decorating tips 1M, 1A, 2C or 4B; plus quickly and easily switch out tips to create a variety of multi-color decorations using the included coupler ring.
  • Also available in a set that includes decorating tips 1M and 1A, six 16 inch disposable decorating bags and illustrated icing designs.

Follow the step-by-step instructions here and get swirling! It’s an easy way to make impressive cupcakes for school graduations, the 4th of July, birthday parties, baby showers, bridal showers and so much more.

This is the worst product since the “Topping Tornado”. There are much better and easier ways to get this effect.

  2. Jackie C. says:

Why waste your money on these. When all u have to do is stripe your bag w/ 3 different colors, & go for it. U can even use 4 or 5 colors just striping your bag.
I learned this from Liz Larson. Anybody ever watch her work of art?

    Thanks, But no thanks.

  11. I will buy one I have every thing wilton makes so now I will have this, I like to come up with new ways to use things

  12. Bob says:

Great idea! Wilton has the best. I keep stocking my shelves.

  13. Summra says:

Great idea for beginners, like children. I think it’s a waste of money when you can do this in one icing bag and fill it 1/3 with one color, turn the bag fill with another and then with the third color.

    • Megan says:

Doing as you described by the time you get to the bottom of your bag the colors have almost mixted and there is no way to refill your bag and couture to have good glean lines between you colors. With this you could frost 200 cupcakes and use the same three bags and the 1st one will look just like the 200th one.

      Hi Kelly,

Saw these at AC Moore, both the set & coupler-only. I expect the set has use instructions in package; coupler-only does not. A decorator for 40+ yrs, I can figure it out from experience. A novice might need more. Keep in mind for future. And not all have internet. I do not, but used my brother’s phone to arrive here. Not always available to me. Store said you also discontinued yearbooks. I always purchased one. Great for creative inspiration, instructions, & products. What a disregard for loyal patrons! Shame on you.

  16. Elizabeth Krieger says:

I bought it and was greatly excited to have a different way to do cupcakes. What they don’t say is that you have to have the strength of Hercules to get the bags to work properly. The couplers do NOT fit together as nicely together as they would have you think. I have arthritis so yes things are harder for me to do. No matter what I did when I tried to do just the two colors, frosting leaked. I put the third coupler on and it still leaked but not as bad. I was disappointed that it was so hard to work with.

    • Lisa says:

The coupler fits together fine if you make sure to check the little tabs on the side of each piece and match them up properly. They only fit together in a certain order. Also, they recommend not filling each bag with more than 1/2 cup of icing so it isn’t as difficult to squeeze.

    • Desiree Smith says:

      Hello Elizabeth,

I’m sorry to hear about your experience with Color Swirl. I’m not sure how much your bags were filled, but it may help to only fill up 1/4 of each bag so that you don’t have to squeeze as much icing.

  17. wilma says:

When I just read what you pay there I was wondering if it was only the coupler or with a few tips and bags in it. We paid for this all 13.99 Can. Dollars!?!?!?!?!
    How is this possible?
WE really lover to work with it. And , yes, do not fill the bags to full.

I am looking each and every michaels store in Ontario but unfortunately not able to find.wish to have one

    • wilma says:

      Hi Samia.

In our Michaels store it was gone every time too. So we asked them to hold one for us. And that is why we got it.
It is so much fun and the new coloring is so good to. You can mix it so nice.!!

    • Angie says:

You can get them at Bulk Barn

  19. wilma says:

I tried the 2D on it,but why is that not working.?

    • Desiree Smith says:

      Hi Wilma,

What kind of trouble are you having with the 2D? We recommend using decorating tips 1M, 1A, 2C or 4B.

      • wilma says:

        Hi Desiree,

if you put the 2D on the tri-color coupler it comes off. We have two of them(both couplers and 2D’s) and it comes off. I showed it in (Wilton) class and she was surprised too.
And just what I said, I really like this one too. It looks a little smaller.

        • Desiree Smith says:

          Hi Wilma,

Our large tips have varying diameters. 1M, 1A, 2C and 4B are the only tips that will fit the Color Swirl properly.

          Thank you,

I really want one so I can icing more cupcakes but on all these reviews I don’t know if I should

  22. JoAnn Borella says:

I bought the complete set and there was no instruction paper included. I came to your web site to download the instructions and cannot find them. How do I get the instructions paper that was not included in my kit?

  23. Lacey says:

I also experienced difficulty with this product. The first issue I had was the fact that the 16″ bags need to be cut in order for each coupler to fit and be properly screwed into the ring, but due to the shape of the couplers, they did not fit tightly into the end of the bags after they were properly cut. This made it difficult to keep the bags tight and secure once completely assembled, and frosting came oozing out. And yes, you do need the strength of Hercules to pipe with all 3 bags (and I’m a bit younger and don’t have arthritis, and still had difficulty). I don’t know why I thought this would be easier. There are much easier ways to achieve this look, which I will stick with.

    • Ceylone says:

Lacy, how far did you fill the bag? I just bought today! It redommends filling bag 1/4. I will let you know my results.

    • Desiree Smith says:

      Hello Lacey,

I’m sorry you experienced difficulty with Color Swirl. Did you fill the bags prior to assembling the coupler? It is easier to assemble the coupler and bags first, and then fill each bag with icing. We also recommend the bags be filled 1/4 full so that it is easier to squeeze.

I Love this item, but I’m from Brazil, São Paulo. Please would you inform where can I purchase this? Thank you very much

  25. lucy says:

How can I use only 2 colors do I still need to connect all three couplers

    • Desiree Smith says:

      Hi Lucy,

Yes, you’ll still need to connect all three coupler pieces. We recommend that you fill 2 bags with the same color, and then the third bag with your second color choice to achieve a two-colored swirl.

      • Teresa says:

If you only want to use two bags of frosting, but you’re having leakage through the third section: use the tip of the bag you cut off to insert the third nozzle into. This will block frosting from coming back upbthrough the third section. It is a little difficult to manage the assembly, but you just have to get it set up, before you fill the bags. Hope this helps!

Does anyone know meringue powder can be used to make french macaroons?

  28. Melissa Noble says:

  29. Margaret says:

I tried this for the first time today and i absolutely Love it . I made red , white and blue frosting and it came out beautiful 🙂 Thanks Wilton for all your wonderful products.

  30. Norma says:

Tried to use two bags on the three bag system (using only two bags). There was a lot of blowback of icing back through the 3rd unused position of the coupler..

    Must be doing something wrong…

  31. susan Altrich says:

I bought the Wilton Striped Cupcake Decorating Set, what a piece of junk. You are supposed to be able to stripe your frosting, but here is the directions that are on the package: To prepare decorating bag and tip: Cut 3/4″ off point of decorating bag. Drop tip into decorating bag and push tip firmly into bag. 1/2 ” of decorating tip should be exposed. I necessary, trim decorating bag bit by bit until decorating tip fits correctly. That is IT!!!
NO INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MAKE STRIPES. Wilton needs to get with the program, their products are so expensive and they don’t even tell you how to use them. What are we supposed to do???? GO buy one of their books. I will never buy another Wilton product. Overrated.

This is the biggest piece of junk ever!!!!! Don’t buy it! It is nearly impossible to squeeze the icing through. I was shaking I was squeezing so hard. Yes I followed the 1/4 cup rule. Also, impossible to use only 2 colors. You must use 3 bc you can’t cover the 3rd hole. Icing squeezes out everywhere. I will stick to putting 2 to 3 colors in a bag at once!

I don’t understand… this site says you can use this with just two colors, yet I tried to do that and had frosting coming out of the third empty coupler, it was such a mess!!!! The theory behind it is great and it did pipe a beautiful two tone frosting but what a damn mess!!!!! Hate this and I love all Wilton products. Not to mention that it doesn’t clip together easily and you do have to play with it. It was such a waste of $ 🙁

  36. Q says:

I bought this product and was excited to use it but I got nervous reading some of these reviews about how difficult it is to use. I finally got to use it today and my cupcakes turned out great!!! Yes, it was a little harder to squeeze the icing out, but certainly not as difficult as some of these reviews claimed. And I definitely encourage you to fully assemble the empty bags and the coupler prior to filling the bags with icing. Otherwise I could see it being extremely difficult to put the coupler pieces together if the bags already have icing in them.
I’ve done multi colour icing decorating before with a single bag but this coupler definitely offers a more beautiful end result. The separate colours all stay well defined throughout the entire decorating and you can easily refill each bag as you run low on icing. This product is well worth the money!!
