Three Cakes in Three Weeks!

November 3rd, 2011 by Shawn Broda

After months of not doing any decorating projects, I made up for it big time in October by decorating three cakes in three weeks! It all started with my niece’s 7th birthday.

For the last few years, she’s gone through the pans on the Wilton website to get ideas for her party. This year, she picked Hello Kitty® – easiest character cake ever!

Thanks to Wilton Creamy White Decorator Icing (my favorite product), icing tubes in red, black and yellow, and my Ultimate Tool Caddy™ full of tips and bags, it took less time to decorate Hello Kitty® than it did to clean up afterwards.

The next weekend I attended a party with the Wilton International team. It was a Mexican-themed party, and it just happened to fall on the birthday of our VP of International Sales, Jeff Murphy. I had already volunteered to bring a dessert, so I decided to have a little fun with it.

From my early days at Wilton, I have the Handsome Guy shaped pan in my collection. I used that as the cake, iced it with the decorator icing, then “dressed” the cake with clothes made out of Sugar Sheets.

I finished it off with a laminated picture of Jeff’s face and the hat and maracas from the Fiesta Candle Set – Muchacho Murphy was born! The birthday boy got a great laugh out of it, and his kids thought it was hilarious. So fun, and so easy!

The last of the three cakes was for my little cousin Nico’s 3rd birthday party. He is obsessed with pumpkins this season and asked for a chocolate pumpkin cake – but it needed to feed 40+ people. No problem!

I made an 11×15 sheet cake, iced it in yellow buttercream, then placed a cake made from one half of the Sports Ball Pan on top as the main pumpkin. I added grass, vines and leaves in green and some Smiling Pumpkin Icing Decorations to create a pumpkin patch.

I finished it off with a number 3 on the big pumpkin and a vine-covered “Nico” across the top. He loved the cake, and the only way we could distract him from trying to touch it was by giving him his “#3” candle to hold all day. I think he liked that as much as he liked the cake!

I had so much fun doing these cakes, and, thanks to my handy dandy Wilton staples, they were easy, too. I’m officially on the baking bandwagon and can’t wait to get starting on holiday treats. Bring it on!

I didn’t like the Muchacho Murphy cake. It doesn’t make any sense. It just throws together stereotypes.
