Tips for a Successful Bake Sale

Fall is on its way. The tips of the leaves are already starting to turn that golden yellow and the nights are getting a bit cooler. But nothing says “fall is coming” like going back to school.

I remember being so excited to go back. School always brought so many new activities to the dullness that summer break was starting to show. I participated in many activities throughout my school years. From student council to choir, yearbook to soccer, I tried to keep myself busy. But no matter how busy I became, there was always one event I never passed up a chance to volunteer for – the bake sale.

Since some of the activities I participated in were student-sponsored, we had to find a way to raise money. A bake sale was always the agreed upon method and they were quite successful. Our success followed three simple rules:

  1. Appealing presentation will ensure a sale
  2. Taste will keep them coming back for more
  3. Price items below local bakery prices

It never failed that nicely packaged treats sold first. Cupcakes topped with oversized sprinkles, wrapped in cute baking cups and finished with a fancy 1M swirl always sold before the plainly iced cupcakes. The same theory worked for any treat put on the table. And if it tasted as good as it looked, customers would always come back for more!

Several years have passed and it has been awhile since my last bake sale, but I know that these same rules still apply today. Working at Wilton has given me a chance to experiment with many different recipes and products, some of which are perfect for any bake sale. Here are some of my favorites:

Bake Sale-Ready Cupcakes

Cupcakes These cupcakes are super easy and look great! Be sure to use a fun baking cup that shares the theme of your event. Same goes for your icing. Use your school colors or if you choose a simple vanilla and chocolate approach don’t forget to top them off with sprinkles or an icing decoration. Don’t be afraid of the swirl! Here’s a link to show you how. To package them, use an individual cupcake box with a cute pattern like Cupcake Heaven or something clear like the White Pearl Clear Favor Box Kit.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cavities of standard muffin pan with baking cups.

Bake your favorite cupcakes in prepared pan. Cool completely. Color buttercream icing with icing color. Pipe tip 1M buttercream or chocolate buttercream icing swirl on cupcake top; insert icing decoration.

Each cupcake serves 1.

School Star Cereal Treat Pops

Star Cereal Treat Pops Cereal treats are classic. They take little time to make and always impress. Instead of using a pan to form your shape, you can also use a cookie cutter. Be sure to spray the cutter with non-stick spray before pressing into the cereal treat so it does not stick. Keep the shape simple and try something that ties in with your theme. After sticking in the lollipop stick and letting the treats cool, decorate with icing and sprinkles or dip them in Candy Melts® candy for a delicious alternative. Package with Clear Party Bags and add a ribbon in your school or theme colors to finish off your look.

Spray Star Cookie Treat Pan and rubber spatula or wooden spoon with vegetable pan spray.

In large saucepan, melt butter. Add marshmallows; cook and stir until melted. Remove from heat and add cereal; mix well. Press into prepared pan; insert cookie sticks. When cool to touch, remove from pan. Repeat with remaining cereal mixture. (If mixture becomes hard to work with, microwave at 50 percent power 30 to 60 seconds to soften.

Outline treat with Cookie Icing; add Sprinkles. Let dry. Makes about 2 dozen pops.

Candy Bark

Candy Bark Another simple treat! Candy Melts® candy come in a variety of colors. If you cannot find the perfect color to fit your theme or school colors, use Wilton Primary Candy Colors Set or Garden Candy Colors Set to mix with white Candy Melts for the perfect color. You can also work in your theme by mixing sprinkles into white Candy Melts. Collect 3-5 pieces and package them in Clear Party Bags and close them with a theme coordinated ribbon.

  • 2 packages (12 oz. ea.) White or Light Cocoa Candy Melts candy
  • Rainbow Chip Crunch or other Sprinkles or Sugars

Line 10.5 x 15.5-inch cookie pan with parchment paper.

Melt Candy Melts candy following package instructions; spoon into prepared pan. Tap pan on counter to remove air bubbles; if needed, smooth top with large spatula. Sprinkle on Rainbow Chip Crunch. Chill until firm, about 15 minutes. Remove parchment from pan; break candy into smaller serving pieces.
