Treat Dad to a Homemade Chocolate Father’s Day Cake

June 11th, 2012 by Desiree Smith

If my dad was stranded on a deserted island and he had the choice of a nice piece of chocolate or a phone to call for help, I’m almost certain he’d choose chocolate to snack on while patiently waiting for someone to rescue him. Now that may be a little extreme, but he does love his chocolate! Since I love to spoil any family member on their special day, I knew I had to plan an all-out chocolatey surprise for Father’s Day.

Father's Day Cake

No, my dad does not have a mustache, but he does have a sense of humor and these molds are too fun not to use on any occasion where they fit. I melted different colored Candy Melts® into the Mustache Fun Face Lollipop Mold, set Lollipop Sticks into the cavities and displayed them in a small glass vase with a blue napkin that matched the blue sugar sheet triangle banner and blue mustache.

I also baked a two-layer chocolate cake for dessert. I baked the cakes in two 9” square pans and used this chocolate cake recipe with a chocolate ganache frosting. I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out!

I topped off the cake with some sprinkles and a cake banner made of Sugar Sheets Edible Decorating Paper, then used the Rotary Cutter to cut out triangles. (As an alternative, it would be fun to use the Decorative Scissors or Punches to give some design on the edges.) I kept the banner short and sweet, simply writing “DAD” using black edible FoodWriters Edible Color Markers.

My dad was surprised and intrigued by all of the chocolate and loved the presentation of the mustaches. He was also shocked that he could eat the Sugar Sheet banner. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about baking for my dad, it’s that you can’t go wrong with chocolate!
