A Whimsical First Birthday

February 17th, 2016 by Desiree Smith

First birthdays are a big milestone, and many parents strive to come up with a unique theme that captures the spirit of their son or daughter. Jenny Streicher is no different.

As a Senior Content Designer in the Wilton Decorating Room, she spends her days developing new designs and decorating ideas for cakes and sweet treats. Naturally, Streicher wanted to design and decorate her daughter’s first birthday cake on her own. However, she didn’t stop at one cake – she made five different cakes that created one whimsical first birthday.

“One day I heard this Jimi Hendrix song (Little Wing) and there’s a line that goes, ‘When I’m sad she comes to me with a thousand smiles,'” she said. “I thought of my daughter because she is always so smiley and happy. Whenever I’m feeling down, as long as I look at her, she makes me happy.”

A Whimsical First Birthday

Feeling inspired by the song, Streicher decided to design five cakes to represent different parts of these lyrics*:

Well, she’s walking through the clouds
With a circus mind that’s running wild
Butterflies and zebras
And moonbeams and fairy tales.

That’s all she ever thinks about.
Riding with the wind

When I’m sad, she comes to me
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free
It’s alright, she says it’s alright
Take anything you want from me, anything.
Fly on, little wing.

She kept used pastel tones of peach, pink and teal throughout each cake so they would still look cohesive even though they were five different cakes. The results were simply stunning:
